PERU

Pat and I went with Toucan Tours to SE Peru in August 2003. Toucan Tours run the trip in conjunction with Manu Expeditions. The main tour covered the Mountains and Forests of Manu but we added an extension to visit Machu Picchu and Abra Malaga. Our leader was Huw Lloyd who we found to be excellent. The logistics of the whole tour, including the accommodation and transport were also very good. On the main tour there were only 7 people and there were only 3 of us on the extension. We saw a total of 561 species of birds and heard another 48. It was quite mind-blowing to try to assimilate so many species even though we'd already been to the neo-tropics on four previous occasions.

Site Descriptions:

Huacarpay Lakes: an area of Andean lake and marshes at 3100m surrounded by arid montane scrub. Good road access round the lake and only about 20km from Cuzco

Huancarani: an area of arid montane scrub up to 3700m at the commencement of the Manu Road

Ajunacu: puna grassland and elfin forest at 3370m on the Manu Road

Pillahuata: elfin cloud forest near the tunnels on the Manu Road at c2800m descending to cloud forest

Manu Cloud Forest and Cock-of-the-Rock Lodges: cloud forest zone from 1660 to 1300m on the Manu Road. Torrents and waterfalls. Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge has gardens with bird feeders and manages the Cock-of-the-Rock lek

Amazonia Lodge: located in the foothill zone alongside the Alto Madre De Dios River with a complex of habitats including primary foothill forest, floodplain forest, bamboo, marsh and ox-bow lake. The lodge has a canopy platform and gardens with flowering shrubs for hummers and bird feeders

Alto Madre de Dios River: foothills tributary of the Madre de Dios with shingle banks and islands and rapids

Madre de Dios River: lowland river with sandy banks and much eroded gravel cliffs strewn with flood detritus in the form of huge log jams. Several ox-bow lakes have been cut off from the main river and the channels are much braided

Manu Wildlife Centre: situated on the edge of the Manu Biosphere Reserve, a lodge with a complex of habitats including terra firme sandy clay forest, riverine forest, bamboo, some varzea flooded forest, ox-bow lakes and riverine bluffs and banks. The lodge has two canopy towers one in the terra firme and one overlooking an ox-bow. It is well-equipped with various forms of boat transport for the river and the ox-bows and has an extensive network of forest trails. It has a tapir lick and the nearby Blanquillo Lodge has a macaw and parrot saltlick.

Machu Picchu: in addition to the Inca ruined city, the area has cloud forest and bamboo scrub on the slopes between 2000 and 2400m and the rapids of the Urubamba River from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. Accessible by train, road or on foot by the Inca Trail

Abra Malaga: a high pass at 4500m has disturbed elfin forest on the east slope from 3000-3600m and on the west slope has arid montane scrub and grazed puna grassland with polylepis woods on the high valley slopes. A road from Ollantaytambo to Keabamba gives access
