COLOMBIA
From 27th November to 16th December 2010, Brian and Pat Wetton visited Colombia with Sunrise Birding. Our tour leaders were Gina Nichol and Steve Bird. Our bird guide for the first two weeks was Diego Calderon and for the last five days we had Wally Maury. We thank them all for an excellent trip in the very difficult circumstances of a La Nina year in which Colombia suffered excessive rainfall causing many landslides and floods some of which inevitably affected our itinerary and comfort of birding. We nevertheless recorded 522 species of birds including 490 seen, many being endemics and "lifers". We also wish to thank our fellow birders who were so good-natured throughout, even in pouring rain or deep mud: Dave and Alison Curtis, Mick and Lynda Flude, Christine Raines, Andy Sims, Roger Stansfield and Gordon Wilson. Our drivers coped superbly on some tricky roads and we thank Lucas, Jairo and his wife, Alfredo and our Jeep drivers at Galapagos Road and Jardin. Diego organised excellent facilities for us as well as being a five-star bird guide. We especially loved the alfresco breakfasts and snacks!

Site Profiles:
Chingaza National Park:
On the western slope of the Eastern Cordillera, Chingaza National Park lies east of Bogota and is accessible via a mountain road that cuts through montane forest, temperate scrub, chusquea bamboo and espeletia scrub.
Siecha Lagoons:
North east of Bogota, Siecha is an area of marsh and shallow lagoons.
La Florida Park:
In Bogota this public park has an area of wetland protected as a conservation area. It was an unsuccessful alternative site for Apolinar's Wren when landslides prevented access to other sites. It poured with rain on our visit.
Pedro Palo Lagoon:
Near Tena, South west of Bogota and still on the flanks of the Eastern Cordillera, is an area of sub-tropical woodland with a lake.
Olalla:
Between Girardot and Ibague is an area of dry savannah and scrub where we made a brief evening stop.
Combeima Canyon:
North of Ibague and on the southern edge of the Los Nevados massif in the Central Andes is a canyon stretching from Juntas to El Silencio. The river has fringing woodland and pasture with a track that leads eventually to forest beyond El Silencio.
Galapagos Road:
Near El Cairo is a mountain road leading into the Western Cordillera with areas of good forest on either side. It is good for middle elevation birds and Choco endemics. On our visit it was very wet with several landslides. 4x4 Jeeps are essential for access.
Otun Quimbaya:
This reserve on the western edge of the Central Andes east of Pereira protects upper subtropical and montane forest in the valley of the River Otun.
Recinta del Pensamiento:
The hotel in Manizales had extensive grounds with ponds, lawns, woods and hummingbird feeders.
Rio Blanco:
Located in the Central Cordillera, this reserve east of Manizales is owned by the local water company and managed to protect its woodland at varied altitudes. It also has hummingbird feeders.
Alcazares Arenillo Park:
This eco-park near Manizales is an educational centre with good woodland, scrub and bamboo. We visited here as our planned trip to the paramo on Los Nevados was impossible due to the destruction of the access road.
Cauca Valley:
The Cauca River is one of the two great rivers of Colombia and forms an inter-andean valley between the Western and Central Cordillera. We stopped at several areas of riverside woodland and scrub. There were flood-waters along the valley on our visit.
Jardin:
Above the charming town of Jardin, a mountain road cuts into the Western Cordillera to Ventanas Peak giving access to montane forest and patches of chusquea bamboo. Several mud and landslides meant that we had to access the upper section by foot. 4x4 Jeeps are anyway required.
El Palacio:
Near El Palacio on the Medellin to Bogota road is a wooded valley of the Central Andes.
Rio Claro and Cueva del Condor:
Further along the road to Bogota is this reserve protecting humid foothill forest in the west of the Magdalena Valley, the second great river of Colombia separating Central and Eastern Cordillera. Nearby is an oilbird cave accessed via a walk through pastures and a forest stream.
Victoria:
The pleasant town of Victoria on the western side of the Magdalena Valley has a reserve on the ridge above it protecting humid forest. The road leading to Victoria cuts through savannah and scrub.
Jardin Encantado:
This is a hummingbird garden with a huge number of feeders in the town of San Francisco east of the Medellin to Bogota road.
Sierra de Santa Marta:
Inland from the town of Santa Marta is the highest mountain in Colombia and an access road leads from Minca via the gardens at Palo Alto into the mountains to El Dorado Lodge and the San Lorenzo Ridge. It cuts through forest at varied elevations to reach montane scrub with palms at the ridge. The Lodge has feeders and gardens that are productive. 4x4 vehicles are necessary to access this area, with most endemics at the higher elevations.
Guajira Peninsular and Los Flamencos National Park:
The Guajira Peninsular is the "driest" part of Colombia. Normally an area of dry scrub, beach and coastal lagoons, Los Flamencos was mainly flooded lagoons on our visit. The reserve is best accessed via the small town of Camerones. A huge storm affected our birding here.
Isla de Salamanca:
This national park protects mangrove and coastal scrub with lagoons. The Cienaga to Barranquilla highway cuts through it.
