Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae)
Slightly smaller and more abundant than either Red Admiral, Peacock or Painted Lady, this species has a dark brown underwing with paler brown banding. The upperwing is typically orange or brick red in colour, the forewing having distinctive black and yellow markings whilst both fore and hindwing have blue submarginal triangular markings (lunules). Their habits are similar to the previously mentioned species and are likely to be seen either in March or April when the hibernation period comes to an end or later in the year in mid summer.
